Having a talk with Dorit Jaffe

Dorit Jaffe: Whole Healthy Glow, Radishtowear

Have you already met Dorit Jaffe? She’s the face behind the blog WholeHealthyGlow, health coach from the big Apple and she just happens to be my friend. She creates the most aspiring, jaw dropping recipes by using natural ingredients only. This girl knows how to cook – and I figured it was time to get together and ask her a few things about staying healthy, her kitchen failures (as if she even has those) and which foods she’d take with her to a dessert island ;).

…What does being healthy mean for you?
Being healthy means eating to nourish your body. Living to love yourself, and always aiming for balance in life.

So, what do you do exactly to maintain your health?
I eat a plant-based mainly organic diet. I avoid processed foods and refined sugars. I always try to have as many vegetables as I can during the day, and I’ve noticed that I’ve gained more energy throughout the day, sleep better, and think clearer.

Where does your interest in natural foods come from? 
My Interest in health comes from feeling horrible. Running on carbs, sugars, and just not having an understanding that food is preventative medicine. I was getting sick all the time, and having to take antibiotics often. It wreaked havoc on my body and health, and I knew I wanted to live feeling more alive and not getting sick all the time. I began to work out and I slowly changed my diet to what it has become today. I discovered yoga, began to use breathing exercises to manage stress, and realized that stress was causing me to overeat when I wasn’t even hungry. I felt like a mess, and like I didn’t know how to get to a healthy state. Experimenting with recipes, food photography, following different health pioneers on social media, and joining a gym all helped teach and guide me on how to live a healthier lifestyle. I really enjoyed trying out all these new things and still do! I’ve recently been trying to meditate every day.

But you are only human, do you even eat unhealthy sometimes?
Yes, I indulge from time to time, but in healthier treats, and sugary foods just don’t appeal to me.

What is the best advice someone has ever given you, about being healthy?
Everyone is different. A diet or way of living that works for one person may not work for another. This is why I love health coaching, because I help people based on their individual needs. I don’t expect everyone to respond to the eating a certain way the same as everyone else. I customize a healthy lifestyle that’s manageable and maintainable based on your needs.

So what made you decide to become an health coach/ food blogger?
After I graduated from college with an Advertising and Marketing Communications degree, I realized that I didn’t want a full-time job sitting behind a desk all day, and that it wouldn’t feed my soul. So I decided to see a career coach and all signs pointed to me working with people to better themselves, working for myself, and doing something creative that also gives something positive back to the world. I immediately enrolled in the largest nutrition school, The Institute for Integrative Nutrition. This combined with my business background prepared me for creating my blog and holistic health coaching business.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I follow so many food, and health and wellness bloggers on social media. Their positive messages, personal stories and struggles, and pictures all inspire me.

What’s the story behind your blogs name?
I honestly thought about my name for such a long time. I kept writing down words and brainstorming. I wanted a name that represented living and being whole, which represents my holistic approach of viewing a person as a whole. When your body is glowing on the inside it will glow on the outside. Then Whole Healthy Glow was born.

What are your career goals?
I ‘m actually in the midst of one right now, organizing and hosting my first yoga retreat, Anzan, taking place in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. I’d like to organize more retreats yearly. Another is to work with more people and help guide them to living a more gratifying and fulfilling life. I’d also love to write a cookbook one day.

Ha, out of all the amazing foods you eat – what is your favorite dish?
I love anything with flavor! Mexican, Thai, and Indian foods are my favorites!11140392_10155548091405085_321492445326743964_n

Just curious, because everything looks so perfect …What is your biggest kitchen failure?
Haha, Trying to make buckwheat pancakes but not having the right flour to add to the mixture, and it turning out too gooey to cook.. I’ll have to revisit making buckwheat pancakes again!

Back to your favorites; which ingredients would you take with you to a desert Island?
Probably avocados, and more avocados. Would this desert island grow avocados? ;)

Were do you see yourself 10 years from now
I see myself living somewhere where I’m surrounded by nature. Having my own garden, and maybe having a little shop where I sell healthy products, and serve breakfast/lunch. Also, hosting health and wellness events, retreats, and dinner parties.

You know I write about fashion mostly, so I just have to ask: what are you’re favorites when it comes to fashion brands?”
I love brands like Sandro and Helmet Lang. My style is simple and clean and consists of lots blacks, whites jeans and olive green. I dress pretty casual, but always like to look put together.

What beauty products do you use?
I love Beautycounter’s beauty products. I have sensitive skin and their products are non-toxic. I love their makeup especially, because it doesn’t cause breakouts. I also like Eminence’s Blueberry Soy face moisturizer; it leaves my skin super soft!
